Carrickfergus Mill Ponds Local Nature Reserve

Guests gathered at Carrickfergus Mill Ponds on Friday (24th July) for the official opening of the site as a nature reserve and saw local children enjoy environmental activities including pond dipping and mini beast hunting.

Carrickfergus Mill Ponds is three hectares of land which is an urban oasis for wildlife. The main features of the site are the two former mill ponds which form part of the rich and varied industrial heritage of Carrickfergus. The site includes wetlands, mature trees, species rich hedgerows and grassland, with a good range of species for the size of the area. The Sullatober River flows through the site forming an important wildlife corridor, linking the coast with Oakfield Glen, Bashfordsland Wood and the countryside beyond.

A Local Nature Reserve is a protected area of land designated by a local authority to conserve its environmental and recreational value, with the primary land use being for conservation. This development is part of ongoing work within the Mid and East Antrim Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP) which was officially launched in December 2014. The LBAP has three objectives: to help conserve habitats and species, to raise awareness of local biodiversity and to involve people in biodiversity projects and develop partnerships.

Councillor Billy Ashe, Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, officially opened the site and took the opportunity to thank everyone who contributed to the development of Carrickfergus Mill Ponds Local Nature Reserve, namely, Mid and East Antrim Council staff, the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) Biodiversity Unit and the Council for Nature Conservation and the Countryside (CNCC).

Mid and East Antrim hoists the Green Flag

Mid and East Antrim Borough Council entered four sites for Green Flag consideration this year including Diamond Jubilee Wood, Whitehead and Bashfordsland Wood/Oakfield Glen, Carrickfergus - and are delighted to announce that all four sites received the coveted Green Flag Award.

Green Flag Award applications are judged against eight key criteria: Being a welcoming place; being healthy, safe and secure; clean and well maintained; sustainability; representing conservation and heritage;  community involvement; marketing; and overall management.

Cllr Billy Ashe, Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, said of the awards "Holding a Green Flag Award brings with it a vast amount of prestige. It is also an excellent example of civic achievement and provides communities with a great sense of civic pride. This visibly demonstrates to the local community and councillors that the sites are being well-managed for the benefit of the local community and local wildlife."

Cllr Ashe concluded: “I’d like to thank everyone involved in this process including the Green Flag Award Scheme, Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful and of course our hard-working staff who maintain and manage our green sites. Finally, a big thank you to the local communities who enjoy our sites, get involved in our events and activities and treat the sites with the respect they deserve.”

Woollen Woods Video

Diamond Jubilee Wood, Whitehead was been transformed into a Woollen Wonderland this summer - the first Woollen Wood in Northern Ireland!

Woollen Woods is UK wide project that began in 2013 and covers five regions on the UK mainland. Woollen Woods is an enchanting outdoor art installation featuring hundreds of woodland-themed woollen artworks which were created by schools, knitting groups and individuals all over Northern Ireland.

To mark the grand opening of the Woollen Wood, Mid and East Antrim Borough Council held a free family fun day on Saturday 16th May 2015 in collaboration with Voluntary Arts and Lighthouse Yarns. Activities included arts and crafts such as pom-pom making, felting and origami and environmental activities including bug hunting and pond dipping.

This is a fantastic project which has brought the arts and the environment together. The wool installation will be in the wood until the end of the summer, why not go see for yourself? Look out for felted flowers and fruit, plus woollen wildlife and more creations hidden among the trees!
